We had a Halloween Party on Saturday night since Trick or Treating is a little difficult around here. The Germans don't *really* celebrate it, so one can't count on candy at every (or any) house. So instead of beating down the teaming masses by going on post to Trick or Treat, we had all the kids over here for 2 hours of crazy madcap ghoulish fun.
Evelyn checks out the "Mummy Box" we made... eerie body parts to feel like brains (scrambled eggs), intestines (spaghetti), and fingernails (sliced almonds).
The party eventually disintegrates into a football game when they whiz through all the carefully planned activities in like 20 minutes. Indiana Jones and Harry Potter vs. the Grim Reaper.
After all the little goblins went home, we went out in the woods for dinner and a bonfire, courtesy of the Dads who did not want to be caught dead at a party with 15 kids jacked up on candy. In lieu of trick or treating, Ric and Chris tied glow sticks to 20 bags of candy and the kids had to venture out in the deep dark woods (together and with dads) with flashlights and headlamps to find them. They thought this was a pretty cool deal.
Evelyn and Alexandra.
The kids roast hotdogs over the fire. Alex, Gabe, Evelyn, and Alexandra. I think at the time, Ethan was the guinea pig on a zipline that the dads cooked up. It didn't work, but the thought was nice.
Chris and Gabe stay warm by the fire.
Indiana post zip line.
Later that night a group of German teenagers rang the doorbell and yelled, "Sussin oder Sauerin!" (Sweet or Sour.) I guess that's a reasonable alternative to Trick or Treat, but I think it loses something in translation. So maybe word is getting around that dressing up and getting a bunch of candy is a pretty good deal.

Oh that's funny about your "trick or treaters." Looks like a good party. Way to make the best of it!
